Made in London

In 1975, Andrew Ritchie, inventor and founder of the Brompton bike, expertly engineered to transform an ordinary bike into a small, locked package. A team of 300+ engineers, designers, skilled fabricators, makers, inventors and manufacturers located across the West London factory and expert welding division in Sheffield worked tirelessly to make the world's best folding bike.

See how it is all done in the 360-degree factory tour below.

Design
At Brompton, products are designed and engineered with a real practical value and are built to lat and perform reliably for a long time. The Brompton bike is a bike with personality. And so is the place where it's built. Many of the factory machines are designed and made by the workers. Some of the part are even named after the people who created them.

Skilled Craftmanship
Brompton bike frames are built by hand. A process known as brazing is used to piece together the steel frame. All brazers are trained in-house for 18-months to master their skill. Some Master Brazers have been crafting for over 18 years. Every frame has a small mark at the bottom as a signature from its maker. Travelling 300 km north of the London factory is a factory in Sheffield where specialist TIG weld titanium framesets. The welding process requires a high-level skill and coordination between hand, foot and eye. Each craftsperson has a signature style and their welds are as unique as handwriting.

Unique
Machines

Find the best solutions for every job, Brompton's tooling and manufacturing teams work together to problem-solve anything from bespoke robots that are designed in-house and built from the ground up, to working alongside well-oiled machines which were there from the start. From 7 am to 4 pm, the Brompton building in London has the inspired sounds of collective invention pulsating through its corridors.
